TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR WHEELCHAIR RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
Wheelchair Tie-Down & Occupant Restraint Systems (WTORS) are tested to an international standard called ISO 10542.
According to ISO:10542, a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) must undergo WTORS testing by simulating a near-instantaneous 48 – 0 kph deceleration – a crash test.
A standardised surrogate 85kg wheelchair is used, with a 78kg Anthropomorphic Test Dummy (ATD).
This places a force of over 20g on the surrogate wheelchair and ATD – meaning the WTORS must be able to withstand a load equivalent to 20 times their combined weight.
As wheelchairs and people continue to increase in size, Hook-i Tech is developing new products to meet these greater loads. As a result, new products coming to market may now be tested to weights exceeding the standard required for ISO 10542 compliance.
